Scan SNMP Devices

This article describes how to set up a scan of SNMP Devices in your estate. SNMP Devices include printers, switches and other network devices.

Step-by-step guide

You can set up SNMP devices as a location within an existing project, as a project in its own right, or as a set of targets mixed in with other targets. For the purposes of this example, we will make a new location and a new project to scan the SNMP devices.

Step One - Create a new location for the SNMP Devices

This location should have a list of target IP addresses or target IP ranges where we expect to find the SNMP devices. The sceenshow below shows 2 IP Ranges and the ip address of two printers we wish to scan.

Step Two - ensure we have the required connections available

As a minimum, we require the ICMP and TCP providers to discover devices in IP Address Ranges and the SNMP provider to scan them. The DNS provider is required if you wish to scan by hostname rather than by IP address.

Step Three - Ensure we have the required Product Adapters available

As a minimum we need the Network Device and the Device Discovery adapters

Step Four - Ensure we have the required SNMP Credentials

Most devices use SNMP v2 which require a "community" rather than a user name and password. Most devices have a community of "public" when in their factory default configuration.

Devices using SNMP v3 require a username and password rather than a community.

Step 5 add your location to a project and scan it

Expected Results

Having scanned our SNMP devices, we expect to see some results. Here in the lab using the above configuration we discover a mixture of switches and printers.
